The surface physics group of Prof. J. Osterwalder has expertise in:

  • Photoemission spectroscopy, new developments and its application to investigate structural, electronic and magnetic properties of surfaces.
  • Angle-resolved photoemission, in particular photoelectron diffraction, holography, Fermi surface mapping.
  • Preparation and characterization of atomic and molecular monolayers and of nanostructures based on vicinal crystal surfaces
  • Discovery of the h-BN nanomesh

The state-of-the-art equipment of the laboratory allows in-situ preparation of samples and analysis by:

  • STM (Scanning Tunneling Microscopy)
  • Photoemission
  • Femtosecond laser system for time-resolved photoemission
  • Electron diffraction
  • Spin-resolved photoemission (Swiss Light Source synchrotron radiation facility)
