Boron Nitride Nanomesh as a scaffold for Nanocatalysts and Functional Surfaces

3 years EU-STREP (Specific Targeted Research Project)
April 1, 2005 - June 30, 2008.


This research project is based on the discovery of a
new inorganic nanostructured two dimensional material
[M. Corso et al., Science 303, 217 (2004)],
the boron nitride nanomesh with a ~3nm lattice constant,
which is thermally very stable in vacuum (up to 1000K) and
stable toward air and liquid exposure.

This is a surface science research project.

The main objectives of the NanoMesh project are to understand the self-assembly processes leading to this highly interesting and non-trivial nanostructure, to find routes for controlling the mesh parameters and for mass production, and to demonstrate its prospects for future applications as a oxygen- and carbon-free template for the production of nanocatalysts, nanomagnets and for functionalized surfaces.

This project brings together leading specialists in Europe with unique expertise in synthetic chemistry as well as novel experimental and theoretical techniques. The consortium also includes an industrial partner.
